Joel Watt's Thoughts

Last Night in Soho - February 26th, 2023

Last Night in Soho is both my favourite and least favourite Edgar Wright film. I absolutely despise the third act, which pretty much ruins the rest of the screenplay for me, but I have found such a deep fascination in the film ever since I watched it for the first time. Where it fails in writing, it is a masterclass in concept and direction. I bought the blu-ray and watched through all of the behind the scenes features, and watched what I could find on YouTube. How could one not be inspired by the techniques used on the film? The entire dance sequence is a monumental achievement to behold, one of the most amazing shots I have ever seen in film, and there are so many other fantastic moments littered throughout. Though I was not engaged with the story, I was most engaged with how the film was made and the visual look of everything. Truly fascinating.

Hauntology/Ghost Music - December 26th, 2022

Despite the Christmas season, I've found myself really into haunting kinds of music lately. With my rediscovered love for Broadcast's discography, I've found myself listening to more music related to the hauntology genre and the band itself. I listened to Children of Alice's self titled album today, which was made by some of the members of Broadcast, a haunting sound collage style album that sports quite long and abstract experimental tracks that take wild twists and turns. I also listened to Knife Play by Xiu Xiu, which was recommended by a friend, which also contains quite ghostly tracks in it as well. As I'm writing this I have Brian Eno's Apollo: Atmospheres and Sountracks playing, an expansive and beautiful ambient record, also frequently haunting. I don't know why I've been so entranced with haunting sounds lately, I've also been digging through YouTube's analog horror stuff as well.
